Important Tips to Remember for Beginners in Professional Photography

Taking photos is easy. Since cameras were introduced in smartphones, taking photos can be done anytime, anywhere. The images captured by some phones these days are even comparable to those produced from expensive cameras. However, this does not mean you are already a professional photographer.

You still have a lot to learn before you can be considered a professional in this field. One of the best ways to improve your skills is to take photography study course. There are a lot of classes available if you really want to learn. Some courses are available short-term while others are over a longer period. The key is for you to keep practising following the basic rules in photography.

Follow the exposure triangle

Photography is all about lighting. You need to capture the images with the right use of light. Even if the subject is well-lit, it can still be captured poorly if you don’t know how to use the light to best advantage. On the other hand, a poorly-lit subject can still glow with the magic of light. To snap a good photo, you have to make use of the exposure triangle – aperture, shutter speed and ISO.

Aperture refers to the size of the lens opening. When the aperture is wider, more light is let in. The size also affects the depth of the field. Therefore, some images have blurred backgrounds. Shutter speed refers to the length of time for which the shutter is left open. Slower shutter speeds allow more light to come in. ISO refers to how sensitive the sensor is to light. When the camera has a higher ISO, it can take more images in darker areas. The image can look grainy though. The secret is to find the perfect balance on all 3 elements to have the best photo.

Consider the elements of the photo

You can be lucky as an amateur photographer and capture great images. However, professional photographers don’t take great photos by chance. They carefully study all the elements in a photo to make it look great. The subject, location and other factors are taken into consideration before clicking. You must follow this rule when considering all elements.

Take a look at a different perspective

It is tiring to take photos from the eye level all the time. This is the same perspective people see on a daily basis. Try playing with a different perspective to come up with a remarkable image. Change your elevation or get closer to the subject. You can also move a bit to the side. It is up to you how you can make the image look more exciting.

Give attention to post-processing

It does not mean that you have to edit the photos using filters and effects. You can still make the image look as natural as possible even with a few retouches. It is your choice though if you want to retain the image as it is.
