A career in portrait photography can be ideal for someone who has the right combination of technical expertise and a creative touch. A knowledge of lighting, color and composition and photo editing software is a must. Of course, you’ll also need to enjoy working with a variety of people, including children, be patient, well organized and have an eye for detail as well as great customer service skills. Most portraits are taken in a studio, and the work is sometimes seasonal, with more demand during graduation time or at Christmas. It’s a relatively easy industry in which to work for yourself; one of the best ways to get started is to create a portfolio of work, and perhaps work as an assistant or volunteer. Becoming certified in the field can help too, and certification is offered by the Professional Photographers of America.
